A 17-year-old amateur put his name in the record books Tuesday.Rayhan Thomas, who has been turning heads for years in his home country of India, tied a record in an Official World Golf Ranking event by recording nine consecutive birdies on the Mena Tour.Defending his title at the Dubai Creek Open, Thomas ripped off nine in a row and shot a 10-under 61. He came back in the afternoon and shot 68 to take the lead at Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, which is Thomas home course.It just felt natural, he told reporters afterward. I just let everything flow.Thomas nine consecutive birdies equaled Mark Calcavecchias record at the 2009 Canadian Open. Bernd Wiesberger also made nine in a row earlier this year in Malaysia, but the event was not officially recognized because that round was played with preferred lies.Thomas, ranked 50th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, was grouped Tuesday with 2011 Open champion Darren Clarke.Rayhan is a huge talent, obviously, Clarke said. The way he was playing, this is the worst he could have shot. Rayhans game is trending in the right direction and I think he has a great future ahead of him.
